How this calculator works
Mulch helps garden beds retain moisture, suppress weeds and regulate soil temperature — but too little breaks down and blows away quickly, while too much can smother plant roots. Most landscapers recommend a depth of 2-3 in for standard garden beds.
This calculator multiplies your bed's length and width by your chosen depth to get total volume, then converts it into cubic yards (the unit mulch is often sold in bulk) and bags, based on the bag size you select — typically 1, 2 or 3 cubic feet per bag.
Buying mulch in bulk (by the cubic yard) is usually cheaper than bags for larger areas, generally above 8-10 cubic yards worth. For smaller garden beds, bagged mulch is often more convenient and avoids delivery minimums.
Example: A garden bed 20 ft × 5 ft (100 sq ft) mulched 3 in (0.25 ft) deep needs 25 cubic feet, or about 13 bags of 2-cubic-foot mulch.
