How this calculator works

Running out of boxes mid-pack — or buying way more than you need — is one of the most common moving frustrations. This calculator estimates a box breakdown by size based on typical belongings for a home of your size, adjusted for the number of people living there.

As a rule of thumb, larger homes need more boxes across every size category, and studio or one-bedroom apartments need noticeably fewer than a 3 or 4-bedroom house. More people generally means more books, clothes, kitchen items and personal belongings, so this calculator scales the estimate up slightly for larger households.

Specialty boxes (wardrobe boxes, dish barrels, mirror/picture boxes) cover fragile or awkward items that don't fit well in standard boxes. This is an estimate to help you shop and plan — the exact number always depends on how much you own and how minimalist (or not) your household is.

Example: A 3-bedroom home with 4 people typically needs around 45 small, 33 medium, 21 large and 11 specialty boxes.

Frequently asked questions

How many boxes do I need to move?

It depends on your home size and how many people live there. This calculator gives you a size-by-size estimate (small, medium, large, specialty) based on typical belongings for your household.

What's the difference between small, medium and large moving boxes?

Small boxes (1.5 cu ft) are for heavy items like books, medium boxes (3 cu ft) suit kitchen items and toys, and large boxes (4.5 cu ft) work best for lightweight bulky items like linens and pillows.

What are specialty boxes for?

Specialty boxes include wardrobe boxes (for hanging clothes), dish barrels (for fragile kitchenware) and mirror/picture boxes (for flat, fragile items).

Should I buy extra boxes?

Yes, it's common to run slightly short — buying a few extra of each size, especially small and medium, is a safe practice. Many box retailers offer returns on unused boxes.

How accurate is this box estimate?

This is a general estimate based on typical household sizes. Minimalist households may need fewer boxes; households with a lot of belongings, hobbies or storage may need more.
